Addition and Subtraction Task

Students completed an independent addition and subtraction task today and are getting very adept at explaining if their answer is reasonable by estimating first. Encourage them to continue to explain their work to you and practice adding and subtracting 4 & 5 digit numbers, especially with zeros, so they don't forget about re-grouping.

Independent Math Task

Students will be given an independent math task / show what you know on addition and subtraction of 4-digit numbers.  A review sheet will be completed in class and sent home tomorrow, so we can start fresh in January.

Addition and Subtraction of 4-Digit Numbers

Students continue to work on the addition and subtraction of 4-digit numbers.  When practicing at home, get your child to explain why they need to regroup, especially in subtraction to ensure they have a solid understanding.  Don't forget to use the Mathletics program to help supplement their learning.

K.T.A.C.

Today we used a strategy called K.T.A.C. to tackle word problems.  K stands for knowledge or what the question states.  T represents thinking or what we think must be done to solve the problem.  A is for application - this is actually where we find the answer (can be +, -, x, /).  Finally C is for communication - using a sentence, or communicating our results in writing.

Responsible Digital Citizens

Students continued to discuss how to be safe online, compared online and offline communities and how we are expected to act in each.  They were reminded that not everything you read and see online is the truth.

Special Presentation Today

We had a special guest visit the Grade 4's today to talk about animal care and how being a responsible digital citizen can help animals around the world.  Thanks to Marley and Dr. Als from Orleans Vet Hospital!

Good Samaritans on the Digital Road

Grade 4 students continued to discuss what it means to be a Samaritan on the Digital Road today, namely appropriate behaviour while using technology, including social media.  The picture yesterday was to help your child find a video called "One Day - Kindness Boomerang" which correlates nicely with Anti-Bullying Week and our discussions on being a responsible citizen.

Descriptive Writing

Our study of descriptive writing led us to similes today.  See if you and your child can create similes this weekend.  They were also asked to find out what a metaphor is. Thank you to all parents who came for parent teacher interviews.  It's always a pleasure to share your child's learning.

Remembrance Day Ceremony

Thanks to everyone who attended our Remembrance Day Ceremony.  It was a very moving service that allowed everyone to take time to remember and honour the men and women who continue to give up their lives in war torn countries for freedom and peace.

Bible Ceremony

The Grade 4's were presented with their own copy of the New Testament today at our Bible Ceremony.  Father was thoroughly impressed by how well behaved and prepared our students were. A thank you to all parents and grandparents who were able to attend.  Enjoy sharing our Catholic story!

CASI

Students started their first CASI (Comprehension, Attitude, Strategies, Interests) today.  This is an assessment designed to measure a students approach to reading and level of comprehension.  They were asked to summarize the text and answer "thinking" questions using their own ideas and information from the story. Ask your child about "Joe's Junk" this weekend.

Independent Patterning Task

First Spirit Assembly

The Grade 4 students have the privilege of presenting the Gospel Value of Community at our first Spirit Assembly. Today we examined a biblical quote that best exemplifies this. More details to follow...

Number Patterns

Students are learning to create, extend and describe growing, shrinking and repeating patterns using mathematical language such as term, core, increasing and decreasing.  They are recognizing the importance of clarifying pattern rules in order for the pattern to be extended correctly.

I would like to extend a HUGE thank you to Blair Plummer, our co-op student who was an enormous help in our class this semester.  His dedication and hard work really benefitted our students. Tomorrow is his last day.  We wish him every success as he embarks on his next journey in the fall to Ryerson University.

OAC Trip Tomorrow

Just a reminder to dress appropriately for our trip to the Ottawa Athletic Club tomorrow.  Students are asked to bring a healthy lunch and snacks, a water bottle, their swim suit and a towel.  It will be an awesome day!

Dramatizing Parables

Students began to present their interpretation of various parables.  Their success criteria was voice projection and how their actions conveyed the message of the parable.  Fellow classmates were then encouraged to provide their peers with 3 stars (positive feedback) and a wish (something to consider for next time).

Students began a discussion about the miracle of life.  It stimulated a lot of questions.  Terms mentioned include umbilical cord, placenta, amniotic sac, sperm cells and ovum.

Continue to practice multiplication and division facts daily.  Encourage them to share the fact family for every equation. For example:  8 x 7 = 56, 7 x 8 = 56, 
56 / 7 = 8, 56 / 8 = 7.

Stations of the Cross

Students participated in Stations of the Cross today and discussed Jesus' journey as He carried His cross.  At the end of the 14th Station, we reflected on the many things we are grateful for how we should always ask ourselves when faced with a difficult situation, "What would Jesus do?"

Multiplication and Division Review

Students have almost completed their multiplication and division unit.  Their homework this week reflects what they should review.  We will go through it tomorrow (we ran out of time today) and they can practice it over the weekend.  They will "show what they know" about multiplication and division on Tuesday.
