Last Spirit Assembly

Fractions and Decimals
Students continue to study the relationship between fractions and decimals. They are learning how to write a mixed number as a decimal. For example, 2 1/10 is the same as 2.1.

Family Life
Students have been sharing baby stories as we continue to discuss God's plan for birth and new life. New terms include sperm (male life giving part), ovum (female life giving part) and conception. Additional questions may arise as the information presented is very generic.

Fractions / Narrative Writing
Students have begun to review fractions. They are exploring what the numerator, denominator, mixed and equivalent fractions are. They continue their in depth study of narrative writing and will be learning about the importance of dialogue in advancing the plot.

Elements of Plot

Book Report Rough Draft
Students were told they can submit a rough copy of their book report (through Google docs or on paper) in order to gain feedback on how to bump up their mark. This can be submitted any time prior to the due date of June 6th. As always, parental support is much appreciated.

Google Read and Write
Students have been learning to use the google read and write add on as an important tool in writing. Login to your child's account and ask them to show you all the wonderful things they can do with this resource, such as word predictor and the speech feature.

Multiplying Larger Numbers Review
Students were given a multiplication review in their homework today. They should be able to complete this independently. Next Tuesday we will complete an independent task or "show what you know". Please help your child to review the questions and continue to practice facts daily.

Book Report Due May 2
Most students have chosen their book for their book report and are well on their way. The class was told that they may use a computer to answer the questions, as long as they follow the format and print out a hard copy of their work. I am looking forward to reading the finished products.

Using Easy Numbers to Simplify Multiplication
Students are using easier multiplication facts to begin to multiply 2 digit numbers by 1 digit. For example: 5 x 32 is equal to 5 x 30 + 5 x 2
5 x 32 =. 150 + 10
=. 160
This strategy ensures students have a strong number sense and are readily able to decompose and compose numbers.

Independent Data Management Task
Students will have the opportunity to independently "show what they know" on Data Management Tuesday. They are encouraged to review their homework and see me if they are having any difficulty. Monday will be set aside for review.

Culminating Data Management Task
Students worked in groups of three to complete their culminating data management task. They looked at data from a school playground project that they had to interpret and then graph. They were asked to work collaboratively and justify each answer based on information provided. Stay tuned for the finished product!

Interpreting Data
Students have been learning about the mean, median, mode and range in describing a data set. Ask your child to tell you what each of these mean. Hint: mean is the average, median is the middle number, mode is the most common and range is the difference between the highest and lowest value.

Christian Meditation
Today students discussed Christian Meditation. This introductory lesson was designed to prepare students for meditation and how we can use this time to strengthen our relationship with Jesus. Ask about the mantra "maranatha" and what it means.

C.A.S.I. Assessment
Students began their second C.A.S.I. Reading Assessment today to gage their improvement in comprehension over the term. Students were tasked to independently read a passage and complete a summary and give the main idea. They will continue tomorrow. Ask your child to tell you about the story called "Islands".
